Hi Everyone, another busy week has past with Chloe going to her new home as well as our lovely pups Effie and Andy who weren't with us for long at all. We do have two female chihuahua x pups still looking for their forever homes. If you are willing to put the time into training them and be prepared for any normal puppy behaviour, like chewing of things, then come see us so we can arrange a meeting. They are very cute and are now about 11 weeks old.

The biggest news this week was Benson going to his foster home with Anna. He has settled in well and I am sure he will appreciate the home comforts during the winter nights. Anna and Rick, we can't thank you enough.

With Benson gone to his foster home I was able to pick up Bobby, a 3yr old staffy x who was due to be euthanased today.

He was surrendered to the pound as he attacked a cat who went into his yard. He is a very timid boy, particularly of men, (not nasty though) so perhaps he hasn't had such a great life previously. It took me a while to get him into the car and he spent the journey nestled on the floor behind the driver's seat. I put my hand around to pat him and all I got was lots of licks. Such a sweetie.

Through the help of a Perth Pets in Need Facebook, we had a lovely young lady named Rebecca pick up another dog from the same pound who was also due to be put to sleep today. She is a lovely kelpie girl now named Tuppence.

Bobba and Jordan went to their new homes today due to the great work from Lyn, our Friday carer. It has been a good week with two dogs saved from an unnecessary death and the others to their forever homes and foster home.

Lastly, is there any kind heart out there who is willing to foster dear old Leo? (or give him his forever home) He is just the sweetest dog, (does need to lose some weight) absolutely loves company and a little daily walk. Anyone who is interested please contact the shelter 93986616.

Our quiz night which was held on the 16th April was a huge success, raising $7962.00. Many thanks go to all the people who gave their time, fabulous donations for prizes and to the large number of people who attended and supported us so well. Emily and the fund raising team did a lot of hard work and obviously it paid off well, so a big thankyou to them. Overall a fun night and all the cats and dogs will benefit from the money raised.

As you know the website has been updated so I have not been able to post for a while. The latest good news is Bali, our long term resident is now being fostered by Beth and Jim, fabulous volunteers who do a lot for the shelter. They have taken Bali into their home and he is doing really well and by the photos they have sent, you can see he is very happy.
Bali is still waiting for his forever home.

Last Sunday (3rd October) was Dogs Day Out at Rushton Park, Kelmscott. Three APS dogs, Macro, Marley and Fletch were taken to the event by Dawn, Clare and myself. We met many ex APS dogs with their new families and it was terrific to see them all again. It was amazing to see so many dogs at the event and no dog fights, just all very happy canines. The Dog Agility Clubs got together to organise the agility for the day and all proceeds ($153.10) was kindly donated to APS. Christine from For Paws Pet Grooming of Kelmscott also worked tirelessly doing the dog wash and donated $453.30. Many thanks to the Dog Agility Clubs and Christine from For Paws Pet Grooming for their kind donations. Also thanks go to some APS volunteers, Michael, Suzanne, Norma and Kay for giving up their time to man the APS stand and raise more money to help all the animals. Macro, Marley and Fletch were so well behaved and did us proud! Lucky boys Fletch and Marley went to their new homes the very next day. We will all miss them and hope they have a happy forever after.

UPDATE ON LEROY - HE NOW HAS A HOME, YAY!

Eric had an outing to Brookland Greens with me on Saturday. He was such a little man on a mission to see the world. He could not get in the car quick enough, once in, stood up on the back seat looking out the back window in excitement. I had to secure him to the back seat as I am sure he would have jumped around the car or into the front seat with me. When we got to the park he walked well (although he did pull sometimes) and had great pleasure marking his territory on as many trees as he could. We passed ducks, kids on bikes and skateboards as well as other dogs and he behaved himself, just showed interest but did not lunge or chase. I tried to sit and have cuddles with him before we got into the car to go back to the shelter but Eric was not at all interested at this time, he preferred to check out the action going on around him. I have never known a dog to be so interested in his surroundings. He is different when going to bed at night in the shelter as he will happily have his jacket on (pj's), a rug over him and give kisses and cuddles. He just doesn't have time for that sort of girly stuff when out. This dear older man seems to get overlooked and it would be great to find him a home with someone who has energy (as he still does) to take him on walks but he would not suit anyone who has cats as they are not his favourite furry friends.

Meet Leroy who is a jack russell currently in foster care. He came into the refuge being blind in one eye and our vets recommended he have his eye removed. Last Wednesday he was sterilised, microchipped and had his eye removed. I went to check on him in the clinic that afternoon while he was on the heat pad in the hospital cage. I asked him, "are you alright" and he answered with a groan. He continued to answer me with a groan everytime I spoke to him. He is a dear little fella who would like to be the only dog in the home as he doesn't really like sharing any attention. If you are interested in him please contact the refuge and arrange to meet him.

This past week has been a good one as five dogs have found their new homes. Dear Ella went to a lovely family with four children and two other dogs for company and Wilbur has gone to live with Sarah and her two children. The other lucky fellas were Winston, who left us on Friday and Boris who went today. Suzie, our deaf dog who has a few issues with the lead, has a deposit on her and will be picked up later in the month by Steve who is up for the challenge. Fantastic.

We received sad news about Yukon who was homed about 10mths ago to Bev and Don. He went down hill rapidly and the vets at Warton Rd Vet Clinic did all they could to help him, even sent him onto Murdoch Vet Hospital where his condition worsened. He had blood transfusions but kept hemorrhaging and he was put to sleep in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 6th July. He had either prostate or liver cancer. We are ever so grateful to Bev and Don for giving him 10 months of love and care. He went on two walks a day and had 3 beds in 3 different rooms to sleep on. He loved their 5 yr old grand daughter and was loved by all his family. Condolences to Don and Bev. R.I.P. Yukon.

The cold weather is upon us and the shelter is not the perfect place for any of the dogs but especially the old dogs. They are all given beds with blankets (even though some choose to destroy them overnight) and if we have the right sized jacket, they are also put on to keep them warmer. Our older dogs are Wilbur, Eric and Dougal. I took Dougal to Sanctuary Waters for a change of scenery last Sunday and he is just the sweetest little guy. He travelled well in the car, did not react to birds, ducks or people and was a pleasure to take out. He is about 11 yrs old and is looking for a kind person to take him home. Just check him out

Also there are some photos of Wilbur and Misty in bed last Wed night. The photos are not too good but gives an idea of how they are tucked up in bed for the cold nights. If anyone would like to donate any jackets size 50cm and 55cm it would be grately appreciated.

Harper and Hooch, our older pooches have now gone to their new homes. It is so good of people to take them into their homes so they can live out their remaining years in a home environment, instead of the refuge. Both Hooch and Harper will repay the new owners with heaps of love.

Now an update from Carol, one of our cat carers.

Good news for our resident diabetic cat, Puss Cat. He has found a wonderful foster home with Mick Ayling, who volunteers and does our gardens. Puss Cat will be a wonderful companion!

We still have many kittens in both quarantine and the kitten sheds. Many of them are getting "big", which we hope isn't a deterrent for taking them home as they are all still bundles of mischief and fun.

An update from one of our ex-APS kittens, Kinky:

It's Easter time here and it's almost as good as Christmas! Although mum hasn't put up a large tree with toys on it, she has been buying something special. She calls them Easter eggs, but they look heaps different than the normal eggs she buys. The best thing about them is that they are covered in shiny gold wrappings. I'm waiting for a chance when she isn't around to steal one and have a play. Anything shiny has got to be good! Mum and dad are also up to something else. They have been buying things that aren't for us. I think I heard them mention the word "puppy" once, but I don't know what a puppy is. All I know is that it has a giant sized bed and that can't be good news.

We have dear old Harper (pictured above) who is desperately needing a home to see out his remaining years, if not a permanent home, a foster home. He is a kelpie x, about 10 yrs old and is a good natured old fella. He would only need a gentle walk to keep him happy and the rest of the time he would be happy to sit quietly by your side. If you are a kind hearted person who is willing to help please come in and meet him, you will not be disappointed.

On Sunday 7th March I took our lovely boy Wilson for an outing to the Applecross Jetty area. He travelled perfectly in the car, just lay on the back seat until we arrived at our destination. Once at the river we took a long walk around the river and he enjoyed all the scents around the place, so much so I had to move him on several times. At first he wasn't too keen to go into the river for a swim but eventually he did get over his apprehension and paddled out but not too far. After all our exercise we drove up to the Village Shopping centre (very dog friendly place) where I got a coffee, he a water and we both shared a bite to eat. Going by his body language he is not too keen on little dogs. The little one we saw down on the jetty happened to be at the coffee shop too but we sat away from this dog and Wilson settled down beside me without a problem. He was a delight to take out and I hope someone who is worthy of this brilliant dog comes along to give him his forever home.

Christmas is fast approaching and the Animal Protection Society have had many kind and generous donations both for the animals and the volunteers. People are so unbelievably good and it is very heartwarming. I would just like to say a big thankyou to all who have donated their gifts of food, toys etc and also to the people who come in and work so hard for no monetary gain. A HAPPY ENDING

Two sisters, Minnie and Dottie (Tess at APS) aged 11 yrs were finally reunited after Tess had been missing for a month prior to their owner having to relinquish Minnie to the pound due to hardship. Tess ended up in the pound and had already been taken in by APS before Minnie arrived at the pound. A good bit of detective work put these two girls back together again and they were rehomed to a lovely lady, Alison, who was willing to take the both of them when she knew they had been together for their entire lives. They are doing really well in their new home.

On 4/11/09 our dear Georgie girl(Rhino to Roan) passed away with Roan kissing and cuddling her until she closed her eyes for the very last time. Roan you are one very special person to take her on knowing she had lymphoma, giving her the chemo to extend her life and also giving her a friend in Hannah, your other special girl. We are all so grateful she got to spend the rest of her days in a home environment and on our visits to see her she was always happy. Our deepest sympathy to you.

Zander the cat, written by Shelagh

Zander is a courageous male ginger kitten who came to the refuge mid July at approximately 6 weeks of age and was seriously injured with a fractured pelvis. He spent the first week with our vet Shelley Wilson at her Bicton practice. When he came back to the refuge he was put on strict cage rest for the next eight weeks. (this certainly paid off as without any surgery his fractured pelvis healed and he can now walk and run, a miracle to see him now) The only time he had a little more room was when he was allowed his daily exercise hour in the cot which is twice the size of this cage. (such a shame for a young otherwise lively kitten) He was never happier than when chewing on your arm, taking out his frustration but he is a lovable little soul who you couldn't help but love.

The vet recently gave him the all clear to go up to the kitten shed which was fantastic news but he must have over done it and became unsteady on his back legs which worried us. He had to go back to the hospital cage for the vet to check him again to make sure he had not undone all the good work achieved over the nine weeks of cage confinement. Shelley advised us that Zander should have another week of cot rest just to see how he was going. Fortunately all was fine , he had just been a little too boisterous for his back legs. (who could blame him for he had a lot of lost time to make up) Zander has grown into a lovely, friendly handsome kitten who is now waiting for that very special home, preferably a quiet home without young children.

UPDATE: The vet recently x-rayed Zander's pelvis and although the pelvis has healed it is now deformed and has left him with a slight problem with his right leg but nothing that will bother him. To see him running around you wouldn't know he had a problem. Last weekend a special family came to the refuge and took Zander home. Even with his previous medical history they were more than happy to pay the usual price of $150.00. Miracles do happen and it is another story with a lovely outcome thanks to everyone who cared for him. May he have many happy years with his new loving family.

It is with great sadness that I relate to you that our dear Hercules has passed away. He came into the shelter on 9/3/09 and stayed with us until 17/5/09 when Karma and Paki gave him a loving home. They renamed him Lazarus and sent photos of him in his new home and he looked so happy there. He was recently diagnosed with a brain tumour and suffered seizures and blindness. This all happened within two weeks. On the 24th August his very caring parents made the only decision they could and with much compassion and sadness he was sent to Rainbow Bridge. We thank Karma and Paki for giving this darling boy love, freedom and affection until he passed. RIP Hercules/Lazarus.

Clare and I visited Roan at her home to see Georgie and her new friend, Hanna. No one would have thought that Georgie would have been able to share a home with another dog but it seems Georgie and Hanna get along well. Georgie has had one dose of chemo and at the present moment her lumps around her neck have gone down so it seems the chemo is working well. Of course, it could come back at any time but at the present moment she is happy in her new home and enjoying life. Here is a picture of Hanna and Georgie playing tug-o-war. Georgie had the stick and Hanna went over to take it off Georgie, hence the tug-o-war. No aggressiveness, just play. Hanna was a rescue dog as well and is such a gorgeous girl.

Our dear dog Georgie was returned to us recently and since her return we have found out she has lymphoma. We are very fortunate to have Roan, a vet, come forward to foster her. So far Georgie is undergoing chemo and doing well but we believe she will only have up to two years of life left. Georgie is such a character with a great personality. Clare, our head carer, asked her to smile while taking her photo and she did! See top photo.

MIRACLES DO HAPPEN

A kitten named Pumpkin came to the refuge suffering a broken back after a mattress fell on her and the owners couldn't afford to treat her or put her to sleep. Our fantastic vet, Shelley, asked if someone could take her home and massage her back legs daily and Clare, our head dog carer, did just that. After a couple of weeks of dedicated care from Clare, Shelley put splints on little Pumpkin. Two weeks later when the splints were taken off she was able to walk again. Such a miracle. Due to Shelley giving her the chance she needed, Clare's tremendous effort, love and care and Pumpkin's own strong spirit, she made this miraculous recovery. She now has a permanent home with Clare.

Our dear old resident, akita x Charlie, sadly passed away on the 28th March. He was an old dog who should never have been left in the pound at his age. Charlie knew a lot of love during his days at the APS and seemed happy to be with us. I took him to the vet at Bicton recently and he enjoyed the journey, so interested in the world while looking out the window. He will be sadly missed by everyone who came into contact with him. His ashes will be brought back to the APS, the last home he knew. R.I.P. CHARLIE

DO I GO HOME TODAY?

My family brought me home,
Cradled in their arms.
They cuddled me and smiled at me,

They played and laughed with me,

They even fought to hold the leash,

When I played with that old shoe.

The kids and I would grab a rag,
For hours we would tug.

When I chewed the bathroom rug.

They said I was out of control,
And would have to live outside.
This I did not understand,
Although I tried and tried.

The walks stopped one by one,
They said they hadn't time.
I wish that I could change things,
I wish I knew my crime.

My life became so lonely,
In the backyard on a chain.
I barked and barked all day long,
To keep from going insane.

So they brought me to the shelter,
But were embarrassed to say why.
They said I caused an allergy,
And then kissed me goodbye.

If I'd only had some classes,
When I was a little pup.
I wouldn't have been hard to handle,
When I was all grown up.

"You only have one day left,"
I heard the worker say.
Does this mean a second chance?

Faith and Courage, Hope's pups, have grown so much since birth and I am happy to say they have now gone to their new homes. Leisa has now adopted Hope and I am sure she will give her a very happy life. We are very appreciative of Leisa's help in fostering all the dogs and it gave the pups a better start to life. Sorry I have not updated for a while but it has been a very busy time. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and will have a terrific 2009. I have to share the news about Hope. She has become a mum of two dear puppies, a boy and a girl, Faith and Courage and all are doing very well. At the time she came to the refuge we were unaware that she was pregnant. Hope has been living with Leisa, a volunteer, who has been fostering her until she had her pups. Leisa is now going to give her a permanent home as she just can't bear to part with her. Thanks so much Leisa. I would also like to thank all the kind and generous people who donated money to pay for Hope's vet bills for her consultation and operation. It has been fully covered now and we appreciate the help. Here are some of the photos of Hope after giving birth and some of the pups a couple of weeks later.

A Story of Hope

This little girl, a sharpei x, was seen by a good samaritan after a car pulled away on Albany Highway. We believe she may have been dumped. When we took her in she was blind and very, very skinny. She was named Hope, in hope she might get her sight back and get a loving home. Hope has been to see Dr Colin Sherry, an eye specialist at the Champion Lake Veterinary Centre. A big thankyou goes to him for his expertise and generosity. He thinks she has never had sight and needs an operation for entropian of the right eye. This is where the eyelid turns inward and the lashes rub on the eye. Since she has been with us she has put on a lot of weight and is such a happy little girl. She does get a bit growly when dogs are near her but that is probably because she doesn't know if they are going to attack her, so she warns them off. We are hoping there is a special person out there to give her a loving home, preferably where she is the only animal in the home. If anyone would like to donate money for her operation it would be kindly received.

DIXIE

The APS dog walk was held at Bibra Lake on the 26th October and what a great day it was. Miriam, our Thursday dog carer took Milo and I took Dixie. We walked the 6 kilometres around the lake and the dogs got along very well together. As we were walking around I noticed how much Milo loves Miriam. To see him look at her was so lovely. Both dogs enjoyed the sausage sizzle afterwards and caught up with some ex APS dogs, Smokey and Faith (now Kelly) who were also on the walk. Dixie and I spent time after the walk sitting on the grass area together and then took a short walk along the jetty. It was good for Milo and Dixie to spend time away from the refuge and enjoy a different day. I believe there was about 40 dog walkers on the day and the funds raised will go to help the refuge. Many thanks to all who supported our walk and to Tahlie (our Friday afternoon carer) for organising it. Dixie snoozed on the back seat of my car on the way home. When Dixie arrived back at the refuge she met Carolyn who showed interest in adopting her. After going home to think about it Carolyn came in on Monday and Dixie has now gone to her new home. I am sure she will give Dixie lots of love and a good home. Thankyou and best wishes to Carolyn. I will miss Dixie and will always remember our day out.

The APS Veterinary Day Clinic was officially opened by the mayor of Gosnells on Sunday 12th October and will be in use this week. We are all thrilled as now the animals don't have to be transported to and from outside vets making it much better for the them. Much gratitude goes to Bicton and Jandakot Vets who helped us out tremendously. Our new clinic was made possible due to the kind generosity of the late Mr Gerard Hendriks who had a great love of animals.

Don't forget we have our dog walk on the 26th October, 11am - 3pm at Bibra Lake (the park opposite Adventure World). Bring your pooch for a walk around the lake, the cost being $5. Refreshments are available and we have stalls and activities. We do ask that you keep your dog on a lead at all times please. See you there!

HELP NEEDED TO FIND CAT'S OWNER

Last week a stray DLH white cat from Hamilton Hill was taken into the refuge. Shelagh was elated to find that she had a microchip but sadly the database was not up to date so we were unable to track down the owner. Since then we have found out the cat's name is Belle, she was born in 1999 and did live in Wagga Wagga, NSW and the owner's name is Deb. The microchip paperwork has not been altered to show the new address. We were told the area in Wagga Wagga where she lived is where the army personnel live so maybe this is another clue as to her owner's identity. Please contact the APS if you have any idea who owns Belle.

APS UPDATE

The kittens that were found by the dustbin were all rehomed within 5 days after they went up for adoption. What a great outcome for them. Fortunately there are few kittens around this time of year so they soon get homes. A very good reason to promote sterilisation.

Mia, a young cat who came in pregnant to the refuge gave birth recently to four lovely kittens. One of our volunteers is kindly fostering Mia so she can have a pleasant home environment until they are old enough to be put up for adoption. Many thanks to Sue for her kindness. Nena, the fat cat(who did manage to lose some weight) who has been a resident for 6 years, has at last found her new adoptive family. How wonderful for her. We all hope she receives much love and affection for the rest of her years. A big thankyou to her new owners too.

MORE LITTLE LIVES SAVED

On the 7th August, Shelagh our cat carer, received a phone call from a lady who found five kittens in a cardboard box in Westfield. These kittens were by a dustbin on bin day!!! They were brought into the refuge and estimated to be about 6 weeks old. Most of them are fluffy tabbies but one is a short haired grey runt. All are very cute. They were starving on arrival but are all now happy and content with full bellies and just love playing with their toys.

Copper

Our dear girl Copper is going to her new home in Denmark on Saturday. She is well loved at the refuge by everyone who meets her and I am sure the dog walkers who usually take her out will miss her dearly, as will all the volunteers and carers. Kittens Safe and Sound Now

Shelagh, our head cat carer, has relayed some stories about kittens that have been brought into the refuge in the past week.

On the 2nd July a female tabby kitten was found in Armadale car park by the trolley boys. These kind boys fed the kitten until a lady came, took her home and after a few days of tender loving care, she brought the kitten into the refuge. We have called the kitten Kylie. She is about ten weeks of age, very cute and affectionate. How she came to be at the car park, we will never know. It is incredible after what she has been through how trusting and friendly Kylie is, she is a real cutie.

On the 3rd July a kind lady brought a tabby and white male kitten to the refuge after she drove over the top of the kitten in her 4 wheel drive, luckily the wheels missed him. Gerry, as he is now known was very skinny and full of fleas. After being de-flea'd, wormed and given good meals he is hardly recognizable now. He is a cheeky little puss who just loves a cuddle. He has now been put in with Kylie and they are good mates already and can be seen playing together and when worn out they cuddle together and go to sleep.

Two kittens were brought in on the 9th July from Huntingdale. They had been on a property for 2 days without being fed. The first thing Shelagh did was feed them as they were ravenous. She had to be careful not to overfeed them after their lack of food. The food, followed by a bowl of milk disappeared in no time. They are about 14 weeks old, one is a black male and the other is a pretty female, semi longhair tabby. Now safe and secure, they will spend two weeks in quarantine before going to the re-homing sheds, from where hopefully soon they will go to their purr-fect home.

LYNETTE NEEDS A HOME

Today I have a story told to Sharon (one of our cat carers) by Lynette, a resident cat needing a loving new home.

Hello, my name is Lynette. Quite stunning as you can see. I have been called a "glamour puss" but that's really my opinion!! I have been residing at the APS for about one year now and although it's a lovely place to visit I would really love my own home and some people to own as well. It's getting a bit chilly at night here so I wouldn't mind a nice lap to snuggle or a warm bed to curl up on. I don't really like other cats, so a home all of my own to live in would be the bees knees. I may require a little light brush of my beautiful fur once a week (not too much to ask).

Please if you would like me for your own, come down to the APS any day 10am - 4pm, you will be able to pick me out (remember, I am the glamour puss, you can't miss me!) and pay rather a cheap amount of money, $150.00, for me. (although I'm worth MUCH more.

Just wanted to say that beautiful Marlon has at last gone to a new "forever" home and the last time we spoke to his new family they said Marlon had settled in well and they love him.

It is just wonderful when when of our babes goes to a new home, especially after being at the refuge for such a long time. We all cry when they go but they are happy tears that finally they get what we all want....our own family to love and care for us and we to care for them!

We have Caleb who needs a home now and a family to call his own. Caleb is a staffy x aged 3 years and he has the most beautiful temperament, is loving and quite obedient and would make a fantastic companion to any family. Georgeous boy who does need a bit more training but hey, dont we all!

Hi everyone...well, the new Animal Protection Society Veterinary Day Clinic for the APS dogs and cats is almost finished....it is going to look absolutely smashing when it is finished and then we can start on the carpark....wow....we are going to be so "with it"....wont know ourselves will we.
Everything is going along ok at the Refuge though we are still in dire need of volunteer Cat Carers and Dog Carers. These are people who would actually be in charge on their day of volunteering, able to rehome our beautiful furry babies - the cats and dogs, answer the telephone, attend to customers plus check on the general welfare of the furry babes in our care. It would also be of great help if you would assist any volunteer who has come along to clean the dog or cat areas where our precious bundles are presently residing. Do you not know of anyone willing to give a helping paw!? It is interesting volunteer work...never a dull moment...and you would be helping precious bundles of fur find new loving homes...something that gives you a lump in your throat every time it happens...and every time it is still a wonderful moment to wave them off and pray they have a fantastic "forever" home. SO....anyone interested? You can do either a full day or half a day and yes, we wont throw you in at the deep end but will assist with some training....COME ON....don't you have some spare time through the week or perhaps at weekends, for we are open seven days a week. Lots of lovely kittens are available and seeking new loving homes....such pretty kittens too....plus there are many lovely older cats also seeking new loving homes. Between the hours of 10am and 4pm you can come along and meet them all...see the beautiful faces and watch their funny antics.....so cute!

24 Gorgeous dogs are also seeking new homes, some need training, some just want to sit by your side or go for a gentle walk, some want to run and play...all so different with different personalities just like us humans! How about coming along and taking a dog for a walk if you cannot give one of them a home....they need to be taken for a walk every day if possible, just to take the boredom out of the day, so - if you have a spare half an hour...come along and the Dog Carers shall be quite happy to meet you and have you meet our woofers - any time between 8.30am and 3pm.

Just like to say Thank you to Maddington Bunnings for the great donation of a mop and bucket, screwdrivers and small gardening tools. Pretty terrific of them to do this for the APS, so again, thank you very much indeed.

Christmas is looming and we are going to have a Christmas stand at a shopping centre at the end of this year as a fundraiser so we are asking for donations of home made items, home made cards, scarves, babies clothing....anything knitted, sewn, handmade....anything people would buy as a Christmas pressie that we could sell...all would be greatly appreciated. If you cannot drop off your donation to the Refuge then phone the refuge to see if a volunteer is able to pick up. Asking now so we can all get knitting, sewing and getting the ball rolling - so thank you in advance if you are able to help!!

So far, we have absolutely nobody that will fill her boots!

We don't want to close our doors, because after all, a sale could be missed to that special person looking for their special dog, but we just don't have enough funds to look at paying a person for their continued work.

Hello, my name is Kioshi - although I am more often referred to as “Handsome Man” which I am more than happy to answer to.

I am a Staffy cross, with shiny brindle fur and am often told that I have the cutest smile!! My fur has not always been shiny and healthy as I do have a few allergies, but they are under control now with the help of a special shampoo, a new diet and a tablet every other day and hopefully in the not too distant future I will no longer need the tablets. (Here's me and my pal).......
I love to walk and am very clever; I pick up instructions easily and can sit, stay and lie down. I recently went to stay with my Auntie and her two fur children and learnt how to squat rather than lift my leg and for some reason unbeknown to me this really impressed everyone!!!

I have spent a large portion of my four years living at the APS and although I love it here, every night when I’m on my own I dream of my forever family; one that loves me and snuggles me and in some dreams I even get to go to the beach with them. I am happy to share my family with a fur sibling as long as they love me too.

I love to paddle and play ball, but most of all I love to have company, not all the time but a snuggle when I wake up and an ear rub when I am good would make all my dreams come true.

I know its a lonely old blog without any input!!

Not enough hours in the day at the moment! I had to put some pictures up of a very special girl that hasn't been at the APS long. She has been named Latte. She was "dumped" in a cardboard box outside the APS gates with 2 other cats, siblings likely. I didn't have time at the weekend to check out how old she is.....she is quite hand shy, very timid, but oh wow, so absolutely loving when she knows she can trust you. She is the most amazing creamy latte colour with caramello tones. Imagine her big and fluffy, cared and loved for. She's an absolute doll. I can't wait to hear of the day she goes to her furrever home, just look at her smooching on the wire, awwww, such a honey.

I am a cute, caring Labrador cross. I am presently occupying the role of companion to the canine and caring counterparts. Although this is a role that I enjoy and have taken very seriously since I joined the APS family I now feel that it is time to hand this prestigious role to another worthy canine contender…..naming no names Tag!

My role has included making everyone smile, snuggling my human friends and of course accompanying them on leisurely walks. I am now looking at finding my new family as I am four and a half years old and have dreamt of having a family to call my own for as long as I can remember.

My dream family would have plenty of time to spend playing with me (and my squeaky toys), time to walk with me and most importantly love me like I love them.In return for the above requests being fulfilled, you will find that I am the most loyal friend you could ever have.

I am always happy and I have it on good authority that my hugs can cheer even the gloomiest of days.

Two of our long timer puss mogs were homed at the weekend, together - their new dad is called Paul. His family now consists of Muffy and Genevieve. Gen was one of our rather highly strung cats, amazing what a couple of days in a home environment will do, apparently she hasn't scratched him once, maybe she just did it to us for fun!!! and Muffy - he was also on the blog recently, he's just a big old gentle giant. We couldn't have wished any better for them. Great news and we wish them all happiness!

Also more great news, Wallace the dog - who has been with us for some time at the APS also went to his forever home recently.

And Julie who took very shy Harvey is reporting back to us that he is becoming more and more embroiled into her family life too.

Milo is DESPERATE for a new home, he's not overly happy being locked in at the Refuge and who can blame him? Milo has been at the refuge for about six months. He is a Bull Terrier cross, aged 2 years. He has a great temperament, is lovely to walk and is quite an obedient fellow, oh and pretty handsome in the flesh too. He does need a kind but firm owner so could YOU be that owner and give Milo a new family and home?

This is me, I am Rigby.....a fine looking fellow but a bit sad at being at the Refuge as I need to get out and about with my new family...so where are you!?

I am about 18 months old, a male Staffy/Mastiff cross with a brindle coloured coat. I am a medium sized boy, a bit on the boisterous side so will need to go to a family with older children, but I do have a great nature. I obey basic commands and I am housetrained (yeay). I need to be the only dog in the family but I get on alright with those other furry things called "cats".

Muffy has been at the Animal Protection Society refuge for some time now, in excess of 2.5 years.

He is a male and is 10 years young. He has very youthful looks, is very big - not fat though - and just waiting to be taken home. Muffy hangs out in the kitchen with the other slightly intolerant pusses! Sometimes he acts up like Walter Matthau (grumpy old man), but who can blame him, living out his twilight years in a refuge, even though we are a nice refuge!

Muffy likes to be around you and is also content to not be around you! If you like your "space" - Muffy's your cat.

Do you know someone who is capable of giving this ol' timer the home he deserves in his twilight years? He really is a good puss.

Christmas Past!

Well Christmas and New Year are well and truly over, although nothing stops at the APS. Kittens, cats and dogs still need to be fed, watered and cared for. So again, no relenting break for the volunteers and carers! Well I had 2 weeks off, so I am happy.

Again, we're having another bumper kitten season (what's new), it just astounds me that people in this day and age, don't get their cats sterilised.

One woman called me on Saturday, and asked if we could take 2 kittens, as I chatted to her more, I realised they were hers, mom was 2 years old. I asked why she hadn't had mum sterilised, she said in a plaintive voice "I know, I know, I'll let you have a go at me, because you are right". What the!?!?!?!?! I couldn't believe that she was trying to offload HER 2 kittens on us, she hadn't even bothered to advertise them locally, because quote "there are already quite a few posters up for kittens". Absolutely unbelievable. We have every single one of our quarantine cages full of kittens and fortunately for them, some mums as well, so thank god the ones that come in to us get sterilised and at least we end their cycle.

We also had one of last year's kittens returned to us, as the husband was going to "dispose" of it, due to the fact that it kept walking on the husband's expensive cars. Wow, whoop-te-do, they're only paw prints you fool! Sheesh, some people. I knew I should never have sold her a kitten. I will always rely on my gut feeling from now on.

Our premises are undergoing a fairly major overhaul in most areas! We are busy going through procedures to convert the house on our premises into a surgery for our animals. You try getting a building quote at Christmas!! Well done Sue R and Clare M!!! We are just commencing with planning to upgrade the kitten sheds into more smaller units to ensure the kittens can keep the segregation that they get in quarantine, reducing the chances of illness amongst them.

Once this is done we will then start to look at the existing hospital and quarantine area and refurbish this building.

The kennels are getting an upgrade with doors to the kennels that front the outside. This will be brilliant for the carers as it's very, very stressful walking your kennelled dog through the corridor with every other dog doing their best to distract the dog you are walking! Now they can simply go out the back door of their kennels and voila, open space! Fantastic.

Oh by the way, all of the work I am talking about above is organised and pushed forward by the volunteers at the APS, so again, I will churn out the old chestnut - we are in urgent need of carers and volunteers, you don't have to get involved in all this nitty gritty, but the more people we have on board willing to lend a hand just alleviates the pressure for those individuals that do so much for the APS.

Tag is one of those dogs that people would often stop and notice because of his handsome features but never consider to buy, the reason why is beyond most of us.

Tag has not had the kindest of lives before being bought to the APS, and this contributes into his sometimes not so pleasing kennel demeanour, but spend more than a few seconds looking past his cage and you will see that so much of his personality is hidden due to insecurity and fear.

Once you gain his trust, he comes out of his shell and is an adoring energetic dog. He wags what is left of his severely docked tail at you and beams at you with the warmest smile that begs you to play with him or sit down and give him a cuddle.

Tag is one of those dogs that is typical of a working dog in a suburban environment, with not enough space to run. He has a lot of love to give and a lot of energy to share, but he needs a special person to share it, one that is gentle, patient and calm but firm in their requirements. Tag is a dog that needs training boundaries because that is what makes him feel secure.

Tag has been with us for a long time, he is the longest canine resident we have at the present moment. He is in desperate need of a home and someone to spend the time with him to build up his confidence and trust. We know that person will be greatly surprised how loyal and loving this little guy can be. Please give him a chance.

How beautiful is this special mommy. Gracie was brought in by a very kind lady with her babies a few weeks ago. Her babies are now ready to go their new homes, and could it get any better than to take Gracie home as well!?! Look at how she loves her little boy mini-me. I want this kitten, but my husband has put his foot down. Phooeee. Gracie is incredibly affectionate, her fur is so clean and she feels like silk. She is just adorable.

My name is Wallace and I presently reside at the Animal Protection Society. I am a kelpie cross, just over 1 year old, black/tan and very lovable.

I came from the pound where I was very close to being put to sleep, when I got a lucky break and was taken to the refuge where I am very much loved. People at the pound called me “Mr Ugly” I’m not really sure what that means, but am wondering if maybe this is why I have not been chosen to go to a home that I can call my own?

I am energetic, intelligent, and just love being with people and would make a very loyal companion. Last week I had a bad sore under my chin so (yippee, LUCKY for me) I got to spend quite a bit of time in the office with the carers and volunteers, which I just LOVED!!! It was horrible going back into my kennel. I love the volunteers and carers here, but it is not where I want to spend the rest of my life. I am becoming sad living here and would like my forever home, where my loving owners think of me as anything but Mr Ugly, whatever that means!?!?!

This will be a puss of stature, I just know he will!

MERLIN WENT TO HIS NEW HOME ON SATURDAY, FANTASTIC NEWS Meet Merlin........ poor Merls came in last week all on his own........ he is likely almost 8 weeks of age. When we get a kitten in on his own at that age, we can't help but wonder what befell his mama and siblings, we hope good things for them.

Merls was in a rather bad way when he came in, so flea ridden that he had to be bathed in a flea solution and the hideous things were so prevalent that they were swimming in the solution. yuk.

Notwithstanding that, he's doing fabulously now and is almost ready for his new owners to take him home. He is very loving and quite dignified for a kitten (maybe lack of playtime with siblings, awwww) and he really does love his tucker. Here he is being a cutie patootie

What a gorgeous bubby he is :-) He would really benefit from being a sibling to another puss out there, so come on, why not give him a whirl, he WILL cast a spell on you, I just know it!!!

Why? Because I can, yippeeeeee!! We have some absolutely beautiful kittens in at the moment. Tiny medium to long haired grey ones, they look like the pedigree type, 2 gorgeous black ones, they’re the cheekiest of the bunch, a beautiful tabby, a long haired fluffy black with white facial markings. All four of our kitten sheds are full at the moment, and all have their mummy with them which is fantastic news for them all, of course mums are for sale too, what a perfect combination – a beautiful mom and one of her babies!

We need some more Cat Carers

Hi everyone, I am not going to dress this request up; put very simply we need more people to volunteer as a Cat Carer on weekdays. We have been understaffed for some time, relying on volunteers that do more than 1, 2 and 3 stints per week.

Working as a Cat Carer involves liaising with the public over the phone and obviously in public, selling cats and kittens. You must be people skilled and also administratively minded as there is a bit of paperwork involved. You will also deal with people who need to surrender a cat/kitten(s), if we are unfortunately unable to take them you will need to refer them to other cat homing facilities.

Hours of a cat carer are 8.30 - 4, of course you can do a half day. What is imperative is the afternoon shift as this is when the cats/kittens are fed, and also the premises secured for the evening - dog carers are also around, so you will work this out with the two areas.

The pay isn't up to much, but we can promise you will soon be rewarded with an incredible amount of personal satisfaction and growth, you will meet some incredible people along the way that restore your faith in the human race, of course you WILL be a cat lover and the fulfillment you will get from our gorgeous residents will be remuneration enough.

Well, here I am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you are looking for a friendly, great looking, well behaved (did I mention great looking?), nice natured, generally all round terrific dog, boy am I the dog for you! Here am I being silly, let's go for a walk guys!?

My name is Marlon. I am a Male Kelpie cross. Only young, I am 17 months old and have been at the APS since April 2007. I was brought to the refuge from the pound, as I was far too nice a dog and deserving of a second chance.

My early life story is unknown, as the rangers have no idea where I came from and as I am unable to speak human language, the past is known only to me. I am much happier here though, as I feel safe and loved and I know the kind people here will find me the right home one day.

In the meantime, I have just the happiest disposition. Nothing much fazes me. I am friendly to all the dogs (males included), and would be a great companion dog to a lovely female dog. I am unaware of my star sign, but enjoy going for long walks, eating in (in my kennel), socializing and generally making new friends. My eyes (I think), are my best feature. They speak to you, plead with you to give me just one more pat, one more treat, or, hopefully, a home forever.

I have a great sense of humour, in particular when I am allowed into the kitchen and have once been lucky enough to have grabbed a meat froll from the sink and take off with it. Delicious. Plastic wrap and all! As much as they try here, they just cannot fatten me up.

When visitors come into the refuge, I seem to get overlooked. I guess it is because I am not little and fluffy and cute but, I really am SO well behaved. I truly am no problem at all (I sound too good to be true, don't I?). I have the sleekest brown coat and would be fine inside your home, as I do not lose much hair. Perfect for those chilly nights, when you want to snuggle up to me.

During my walks, I enjoy sitting under a tree and having special time. Just me and the walker. I do SO love my belly to be tickled and my soft, soft ears are perfect for stroking. That is my secret passion time. I become very smoochy then and I am putty in your hands. Look into my eyes, deeply into my eyes. Can't you just imagine how much love you will receive from me? I will adore you forever. Well, what are you waiting for? Come and get me. You know you want me!

For October our dedicated band of volunteers have been out far and wide in all kinds of weather.

Just ask Clare and Gail who spent the day at Carey Baptist School Fair, remember the other Saturday when it was like the North Pole in Perth? Yup you guessed it!! These ladies were standing “still” at a stall all day raising funds for the APS. The stall next to them packed up and went home, can you imagine!?!? Lesser mortals (ME!!!), would have had a hissy fit, probably a bit of a cry and gone home for a bath and a hot toddy. Despite the absolutely crummiest weather “on record” they raised a whopping $400 with their white elephant stall. Hats off to you two ladies.

Also, Angela spent the day recently all on her lonesome at the Jarrahdale Log Chop, managing to raise about $200 in money and countless $$$$ in raising awareness of who we are and the good work we do at the APS. Who knows some of these people may result in happy customers one of these days.

And finally some glorious weekend weather to go with it!!

Saturday morning saw Clare and Mick Mills hold a fundraising sossie sizzle at Bunnings in Maddington. This Bunnings store is an absolutely terrific supporter of the APS, Clare and Mick must have sold a ton as we made just under $400!! Wonder who was doing the cooking?

Saturday morning also saw the arrival of our new APS t-shirts, they are really cute. We have adults and kids T’s for sale, $20 and $12 respectively. I will snap some of our gorgeous volunteers/models wearing them this weekend and publish for all the world to see!

Sunday morning we were out and about at the Dog Walk Fundraiser at a reserve in Huntingdale. I nearly had a heart failure when I got there as the council “locking” service had forgotten to unlock the gate, a kindly Gosnells ranger called Mark dropped what he was doing and came to the rescue, bless him, as it was not his job to do so. But we were without loo’s as these are locked too. Hey ho!!!

Naturally I forgot to take my camera (ahem), but of particular note was the way Tahlie and Andrew’s dog Boris managed to lick a spoon clear of peanut butter in about 3 seconds flat. Ex-APS dog too – what a legend!!

Thanks to everyone that came along, we will find a more stimulating venue next year. We did manage to fundraise $276 – so thank you ever so much to the attendee’s and the donations - not a bad weekend’s work for the APS volunteers and supporters.

Anyway, time to talk shop. My pet du jour is Madame Genevieve.

Meet this pretty puss. If I could photoshop a red velvet diamond encrusted collar on to her, this may give you some idea of the kind of owner she is looking for.

Madame Gen would prefer to live in Claremont, Subiaco and Cottesloe but would consider taking up residence in one of the mansions facing the city in Kalamunda.

She would prefer a house and owners all of her own, as sometimes she’s just a little bit too hoity-toity for other cats, and probably a little bit too set in her ways for small children.

When Madam Gen deems you worthy enough of her love, well she really will show you why she is the perfect posh puss for you.

We at the APS are super keen for Madam Gen to find a new owner as because she is more on the aloof side, the visitors who come to the APS hardly ever get to see her loving personality, it’s such a shame for her.

If you would like to meet Genevieve, please do set some time aside for her, you won’t get to know her unless you hang out with her. She has been with us now for quite some time, and as the months roll on, she loses a little bit of her sparkle, so please give our matriarch of the kitchen just a small chance, she definitely deserves it.

And the silly season is upon us!!!!

So things have been busy, busy down at the APS.

Just to update you on the premises, we had a load of concreting done in order to rectify the crazy paving that was around the place, what a massive difference this has made to the look of the APS, and there is more to come, just as soon as we get our busy concreter booked in. We obtained new outdoor tables for our wonderful volunteers thanks to a government grant :-) We have a new volunteer gardener, who has managed to weed almost the entire front of the APS in two Saturdays. This Sunday gone we had a busy bee day with volunteers and animal carers of the day dashing around the place completely blitzing and tidying up, once again, a fantastic effort from our commited vollies.

Kitten season has begun in earnest! Right now, we have every single one of our quarantine areas (8 in total) full with new mums and babies. As of Saturday, we had 3 drop dead gorgeous tiny, wee black kittens for sale, and their mum too, I thought they would all have gone by now, but not so!! So if you know anyone who is looking for a gorgeous kitten, please send them to us. Do not be fooled by the ads in the Quokka or the Sun. Times - whilst the ad may sound tempting "Free to Good Home", I believe that ours, costing $120, are a fantastic price as this DOES include all their vaccinations, they are sold de'flead and wormed, and includes their sterilisation and microchipping at the age of 6 months. In anybodys book, this is a BARGAIN. But who can put a price on love...... and these little angels are pure joy.

This Sunday, (4th November, 10am-12pm) we are holding our annual Dog Walk fundraiser, and are hoping that all of our supporters and new people too!! will come along and join us.

We will be at Sutherlands Park, Reserve F, located on Gay Street, Huntingdale – off Southern River Road.

Water for our waggy friends will be supplied as well as “pick-up-bags”! Soft drinks will also be available to purchase.

The reserve is a very easy walk around and there is plentiful parking. There is also an excellent playground area for the two legged kids.

There will be prizes to be won by the furkids, so get in training now to ensure you win TOP DOG in these elite categories:

Waggiest tail / butt wiggle
Longest / lolli’est tongue
Fastest peanut butter eater in the West

All we ask is that your dog/s be on a lead at all times, and as we are raising funds for the upkeep of our animals at the APS we ask for a $5 donation per doggy.

It would be fantastic to see as many people there as we can.

On the subject of our wonderful four legged woofer friends, this week I would love for you to meet Saxon, who specifically emailed his story to Emily, who passed it on to me, and asked that he go in this week, for he could not believe that a CAT had made the grade before him, and Pango, a slightly off kilter one at that!

Hi, my name is Saxon, I thought I would start this Article with a little bit about myself, I am happy, smart (I sit when asked) energetic, eager to please and although modest I have to mention the fact that I am indeed a bit of a looker, everybody tells me this, from friends to passer’s by, and I must admit I am inclined to agree!!

I am a young man of two and a half years of age and I am currently residing in the APS hotel for those of us who are between homes at the moment. I am seeking that forever home with a kind and loving companion who has lots of time to give me. In return I will be the most loyal and affectionate companion you could ever wish for, all in all I'm a bit of a catch really.

I am a Kelpie/ Staffy cross of medium build, although I myself have no preference on my companion to be’s build as long as they enjoy playing fetch and long strolls in the park (or the beach). But I would rather there be no young children at my new home as I feel I may be a little too energetic for them.

As I have previously mentioned my love of nice walks I should probably take this opportunity to tell you about my walking style, which is described by all as laid back and relaxed, I like to stay by my companion’s heel and have far too many manners to pull on my lead.

Really, there is too much to say in one short article, so the only way to realise my full potential is to come and visit me at my current abode, where initially there will be a great deal of excitement (but really who can blame me??), the best way for us to get to know one another is a nice relaxing walk, I can suggest a route for you.

I really look forward to meeting my new companion.

Hello dear Animal Protection Society bloggers!

My name is Clare Della-Franca and I am the new President (I will answer to Prez) at the APS, I am taking over the reigns from a very competent ex Prez, Sue Reardon, who thankfully will be staying on the APS committee with us! I am also taking on the reigns of the APS blog, from Clare Mills who did a fantastic job of starting the blog off, there is so much work for us to do down at the APS and I will endeavour to provide at the very least weekly updates for all who are interested! There will be more this week as things get kicked off and I get some more time to upload!!

As a lead off today, I am turning attention to one of our residents at the APS who really does need his forever home and soon.........

Please meet "Pango" - Pango arrived at the APS in Oct 06, as a wee kitten. He has grown up at the APS, why he was overlooked by last year's kitten purchasers I just don't know...... maybe because we have so many, sigh!?!

Pango was recently involved in a fight in the main cattery, which led to a bite within his ear drum which created an abscess. He is currently being treated for an infection in the inner ear and recovering rather well. Because of the infection though he has a rather interesting tilt of the head, this may stay with him for the rest of his life. It actually is very cute and it looks like he's always questioning what you say :-) Pango is a very healthy and robust cat who is an absolute love bug. Within 20 seconds of tickles and cuddles, he is purring like a steam engine. He also has the most amazing lime green eyes, the pictures don't do him justice. We really are loathe to release Pango back into the main cattery, as we all feel because of his "differences" it will single him out for attack again, and poor puss just doesn't have the instinct or desire to fight, little stripy darling.

If you need a puss to keep you company on an evening, maybe to warm up your doona and to say thanks for their tea, instead of complaining about the vegetables, please give some time to thinking about Pango, he is one of the most deserving pusses and the volunteers would be overjoyed to see him meet his new owner.

Well folks, it's Sunday evening, my dinner is on the go and a glass of red is waiting for me!

Hello, here we are again. Last night the quiz night was held and what fun it was! Sue and Greg made it a great night for all and raised over $2,500.00 to support the Animal Protection Society. Many thanks go to Sue and Greg, their daughter Corinne and Sue's mum Eileen. They all do so much to help the Refuge and it is continuing help too. Thanks everyone and bless you.

Thanks must go to the staff at Bunnings as well, the staff who sponsor Tag and Lizzie, two dogs at the refuge, and they sponsor Jenny the cat. The staff donated cat food on Friday, leads, envelopes, pens and lots of other goodies. They too show their support to the Refuge and we thank them so sincerely for all the support they too give.

So many people just recently have been donating cat food to us, as we are very very low on tinned food for all the puss. If you find you can drop any off at Maddington, Livingston, or Kelmscott the cats would be most appreciative, and the vollies say a huge "thank you" on behalf of our furry friends.

We are still in urgent need for Cat and Dog Carers. Carers have a bigger volunteer job than actual volunteers, Carers are in charge of the cats or dogs on "their" day. You would choose a day you would like to take on as being "your" day in charge of the cats or dogs (some days are already taken). The volunteer position asks for you to help with the cleaning, answer the phone, attend to clients, re-home either a dog or cat, feed and check on the care and welfare of the dogs or cats and help the other volunteers making sure they know what to do and how to do it. We do give training, so you will not be thrown in the deep end. If you feel you could help either a half or a full day then please contact Clare Mills at the Refuge.....or if you know of a relative or friend who could help please ask them to give Clare a call.

We are shortly going to be in the process of getting concreting done so things will be a little muddly for a while, but so beneficial when it is finished. We are going to concrete in front of the dog office and a pathway that leads to the dog area. Also the pathway down to the hospital from the cat area will be concreted. We are hoping this will make it a lot easier for wheelchairs to get around the premises of the Animal Protection Society (and our wheelbarrows).

Several dogs have found new families to love them recently which is just great. Decker is doing well after being with APS for a year, Stevie and Lexi have gone to new homes as has Bronson and Bella. Bella's owner is overjoyed with her. Also, Trixie our gorgeous Bully x who had been with us for a while - she went to a new home with Lauren and Lauren's family and so far so good....everything is going well. Trixie is deaf, so Lauren and her family have a task on their hands to train Trixie but apparently Trixie is learning fast and has been a very good girl. Good luck to them all and bless Lauren and her family for giving Trixie that chance she so needed. xx

I would like to share with you a letter that APS received this past week. It is a most happy ever after letter.
"Thank you so much to your refuge and to Shelagh for returning Natasha to me. My fiance and I bought Natasha and her brother Toby as 8 weeks old from Shenton Park Refuge. 8 months ago our 1 year old adored black and white disappeared. She was extremely loved, friendly and affectionate. We called all the local vets to see if she had been handed in lost, and we walked most of our suburb handing out letters and door knocking, but she never came home. Then the other day I received a call from Shelagh saying the APS had my cat. Shelagh had scanned the cat and found a micro-chip number. The micro-chip company had then been contacted and the cat was found to be Natasha. I cried. Thank you so much to the family who cared for her for two weeks after finding her in the forest and thank you so much to the Animal Protection Society for caring for her and for contacting me. I cannot thank you enough. When I brought her home I swear she sknew exactly where she was, even after 8 months. She purred the moment I took her out of the cat box, and even though I had blocked the cat flap up she knew it was there. She slept inbetween the two of us last night and was just so relaxed and content. She knew she was home. I could never have expected such a miracle and I hope you realise what a difference you and your volunteers like Shelagh make to cats lives and to people like me.

What a great outcome and another reason for micro-chipping. You just never know what the future holds so to keep your pets safe might be a good idea to get that special furry friend micro-chipped. But if you lose your pet let all your local vets know, telephone Refuges. If you lose your dog telephone the Rangers but also go to as many Pounds as you can. Usually there are photos of the dogs outside the Pounds and you can check to see if your beloved furry is there. Physically check - for how you perceive your furry friend might not be how the Rangers or Vets perceive your dog (you say a jack russell, they say a small kelpie x - just kidding but you get the drift). HOWEVER - Dont rely on the telephone!! Go see for yourself.

Hello everyone, been a while since we have added anything. All the cats and dogs at the Refuge are well, we do not have many kittens now so perhaps the cat volunteers will have a little respite before the next onslaught of them. Such a shame that so many kittens during the "kitten season" are looking for families to take them in, shame that so many kittens are dumped. We do what we can at the Animal Protection Society but there are so many, far too many, kittens needing a new home and family.
Several dogs and cats have found their new loved ones and have gone off to their new homes, which is what all the volunteers love to see.
Dont forget - if you have not booked your table for the quiz night telephone Sue on 9456 1874 straight away - you will have a most enjoyable evening for sure so be sure not to miss it !!
We very urgently need tins of cat food - there are donation bins at Maddington, Kelmscott, Livingston and Armadale shopping centres and if you can donate a can or two we would be very grateful. Or, you could call in to the Refuge itself to drop some off - call in and say hello to us all too.

Midnight is a domestic semi long haired male puss, black in colour and he is UNHAPPY. He really hates being at the refuge. He was found as a stray after living at Bibra Lake for about six weeks. He is affectionate but not keen on being around other cats - he prefers his own company or human company. He is unhappy, cries and growls so he has to be confined to a cage so he does not hurt other cats. He is excellent with children but it is awful to see him so sad. All Midnight wants is to have a home of his own, curl up on his owners bed or sit beside his owner on their settee and be happy to spend the rest of his life content with his world. He wont have that at APS for he likes his own space and at the Refuge he has to share his space with 85 other cats.

Well what a couple of weeks it has been. First we had the Annual Street Appeal and a several volunteers were out there shaking a can in Perth, Armadale and Roleystone to fundraise on behalf of APS, but perhaps next year we might be able to persuade a few more people to come along and help on the day. Think about it for next time !!

Two days later we had our Annual Fete and managed to raise just over $2,300.00 which was terrific. What fantastic support we had too. Caroline of For Paws Pet Grooming at Kelmscott came along for the day and presented APS with 100% of the money she had collected for doggie grooming at APS, so thank you Caroline. Also, Old McDonalds Farm were there entertaining everyone with all the delightful farmyard animals, plus Lyn joined us with her ferrets. We had a lot of interesting stalls selling all kinds of wonderful items kindly donated to APS by many caring people. Just wonderful the amount of support that is given to the Refuge showing how much people do care about the abandoned animals who come into the care of APS. Thanks to all who gave their support that day including all the volunteers and volunteer Cat and Dog Carers who gave up their day to help. Thank you to everyone who supported the Refuge for we would not exist without that support.

The Staff of Maddington Bunnings have once again sponsored a dog - Bundy. The Staff are great as they sponsor APS cats and dogs providing food and other necessary items the refuge needs. Maddington Bunnings have also been very supportive of the Animal Protection Society allowing us to have fundraising sausage sizzles and providing other necessary items that are needed. Again it is great to see people and companies showing they care !!

Cats George, Melia and Jimmy have all gone to new homes these past few days so we hope they and their new families all have a wonderful life together.

Dogs Honey, Delilah, Ben, Lennox and Matty have all gone to new homes too, bless their little paws. Again, best wishes to them and their new families.

We now look forward to the theatre night at the Don Russell Theatre at Forest Lakes on 25th May, then the quiz night on the 9th June. Hope to see you there. Just phone Sue on 9456 1874 and she can tell you all about both events.

APS urgently needs volunteer Cat Carers - people in charge of the cats and their re-homing. You can volunteer for either half a day or a whole day and training is provided. Please give us a call if you think you might be interested....it is not an unhappy place, far from it, and you would meet some other pretty interesting people. Able to answer the phone and liaise with customers a necessity....and certainly a love of cats.

Dog walkers wanted too.....so if you need to get fit we have the pawfect way for you to do it - woof.

Huge thanks go to Luke and Jo who arrived at the Refuge today laden with gifts and a money donation....from themselves and their wedding guests. Luke and Jo asked for guests to provide these items instead of giving them wedding gifts - what a wonderful and thoughtful gesture on behalf of Luke and Jo - and their guests - many thanks to them all.

What a wet and windy day it was today. The poor cats had to keep flying inside as the rain just kept coming and coming, and the dogs only had a short while outside but they were all walked today.

Another dog came into the Refuge today, and a cat. So many little souls out there needing new homes.

We are urgently requiring a new Cat Carer now, Judi has left us and we need someone to fill in for Mondays or share the day with someone else. We are also needing a new volunteer Cat Carer for Tuesdays and also someone who would be a Cat Carer able to fill in if someone needs time out......anyone out there - do you have some spare time you would, or could, offer to the cats at the APS. Volunteer Cat Carers are in charge on their day, of the cats. They answer the phone, see to guests and rehome cats. They would also help with the cleaning if there are not sufficient volunteers to complete the work. It is a fun time but it can also be hard work but you get to spend time with the cats and meet some interesting people. We provide all the tea and coffee you can drink too !! Call in and have a look around, bring a friend with you, see if the Refuge is somewhere you could spend a few hours helping out and helping to give the cats a better life - and find them a family they can call "theirs". Training will be provided so dont think we just invite you in and then leave you to it...we dont.

APS is getting ready for Sunday - our Annual Fete. Come along and enjoy your day there, stalls of all sorts plus you could have your dog washed and groomed, see the ferrets, see Old McDonalds Farm animals and.....see all the dogs and cats waiting patiently for a family and a new home. You could also enjoy a sausage sizzle or purchase a cup of tea or coffee. You might also see something to purchase for that special lady in your life for Mother's Day.

Blossom is a domestic long haired female Tabby, aged 6 years. She is seeking a new home. Her previous owners could no longer care for her and her sister and they both came in to the Refuge. Her sister has gone to a new home but Blossom is still waiting....and waiting. She is a lovely cat, and happiness to her would be in her own home and to lay on her owners bed, all comfy cosy. She has been at the Refuge for a few months now. Can anyone help make Blossom's dream come true.

There are many cats, kittens and dogs at the Animal Protection Society seeking new homes and loving familes.

Unfortunately Sandy, a male Retriever x, was brought back to us on Monday. As the lady travels a lot, and Sandy is not good in the car, she had to bring him back. She said he is a brilliant dog in every other way - great with children, other dogs and cats, is housetrained and a delight to take to the park and beach. He slept on her bed, was a good companion but just not good in the car....he goes completely off track when in a car and nothing settles him. He needs to go to a home where he wont have to make car journeys, or make just very short ones. He loves to go for a walk, loves to play and is such a nice natured dog that there must be a loving home out there somewhere for him.

Two other dogs - Dakota and Megan - both found new families today, which is absolutely terrific.

Today we heard about the sad passing of Lara, a female beagle/cattle dog who came to us after being found on a highway. A terrific family gave her a loving home but today we heard that Lara has passed away from a brain tumour. Rest in Peace Lara, and thank you to her family for giving her so much joy for the remaining months of her life. xxx

The APS is holding an Annual Fete on the 6th May 2007 at the Refuge premises. This will be from 11am to 3pm...and there will be much to see and do. Old McDonalds Farm will be there, ferrets, and Caroline from For Paws Pet Grooming Salon at Kelmscott will be joining us too so bring your woofers along for a great groom at a cost of only $15 each. Caroline has been willing to lend a helping paw any time, especially if we have an emergency and we thank her most sincerely for this.

Bark Busters will also be joining us on the day plus there will be bric-a-brac, raffle, sausage sizzle, book sale, plants, craft, toys and much more. Come along and enjoy yourself and meet the dogs and cats too. We will also have a hydrobath for those pets of yours who are a wee bit "on the nose" so for a cost of $5 per pet you can have that furry friend bathed and smelling sweetly again.

We are also having our Annual Street Appeal on 4th May 2007 and if you can help with this fundraising event by shaking a can then please give the refuge a call on 9398 6616. Areas where we will be are Perth, Armadale and Roleystone.

We do have chocolates for sale too - $48 for a box of 48 Freddo's. If you wish to purchase chocolates call at the Refuge to collect them or see if someone can drop them off to you. We have plain chocolate, caramello and white chocolate freddo's. Yum!

Dont forget - Annual Fete 6th May from 11am to 3pm....come see if there is something for you to purchase for that special lady in your life for Mother's Day. Or maybe you would like to join that special lady for membership at the APS for $10.00 for a year. Sponsor a dog or cat as a gift - a certificate of that special dog or cat will be sent to you or your person of choice and will contain a photo of the sponsored animal and the name of the person sponsoring. Great way to help the furries.

You could also sponsor a kitten shed, kennel, cattery and have your family name or business put on a plaque for just $200 for a year...showing you sponsor that building at the Refuge. If you come for a look around at the Refuge speak with one of the volunteers about sponsoring a building and they can put you in touch with a Management Committee member.

We are in urgent need of people to take on the volunteer positions of Cat Carer. Being a Carer means you are in charge on "your" day, attend to the phone and see to clients. You make sure you have enough volunteers to do the cleaning and you would help with this volunteer job too if you are needed. You would also be given training as re-homing a little furry is a responsibility and a responsibility we want you to be happy about. Only Carer's can re-home. We need people most days of the week so if you can give a helping hand to this not for profit organisation please call the Refuge on 9398 6616 seven days a week. Either ask to speak with the Carer of the day or ask for the Personnel Manager Clare and the refuge will put her in touch with you. The days can consist of either half a day or the full day. Full day is from about 8.30am (or earlier if you can make it earlier) to 4pm. Cat Carer's have their day....you would commit to say doing each Thursday or each Friday, and this then would become "your" day. Ask your friends and relatives if they would be interested, tell them to give us a call.
If being a Carer does not interest you then how about coming to the Refuge and taking some of the dogs for a walk? The dogs would adore this and you would be getting to meet other people and be out in the fresh air.

Sandy, a male Retriever x who had also been with us for a while....he too went to a new home yesterday. A very nice young lady was willing to open her heart and home to Sandy, which is great. Sandy has a few problems such as seeing flies that are not there and finds being in a car a dreadful experience. He and his new family made it home in once piece and Sandy settled in well overnight. Kioshi a male staffy x went to a new home yesterday (Wednesday 11th April). Kioshi has been with us for a while, was returned to us actually, and has a problem skin condition. He also does not like being left alone, but a lovely lady is willing to give him a new home. His volunteer Carers and the volunteers will miss him dreadfully for he is a very affectionate boy and we all wish him the very best and hope he has a good life for the rest of his days. Good luck Kioshi, we love you lots. xx

The Animal Protection Society, or APS is based in Southern River in Western Australia. Its been in operation for over 30 years caring for abandoned cats and dogs.

We would dearly love more support from the community in the form of donations ( money, food and bedding ) but most importantly we need volunteers to help care for the animals.
